Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University
Richmond, Virginia
The new Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Contemporary Art will be an ‘open’ building, intended as a platform for the presentation of art to both the University community and the public. Located at a vital intersection in downtown Richmond, the ICA will be accessed from all sides via an extensive native bluestone plaza that receives pedestrians from the abutting streets and also forms the public image of the building. The west side of the building features a courtyard and garden with a grove of ginkgo trees surrounding a large reflecting pool. Large slabs of bluestone allow pedestrian movement through native grasses and perennials while creating spaces to display large-scale works of art.
